A petition has been circulated to property owners and eligible voters in Colorado to show support for this initiative. A vote will be held in December 2008.As a former board member of the Breckenridge Sanitation District, I can tell you that Breckenridge Sanitation is a separate entity and has no affiliation to the Town of Breckenridge. To further emphasize this distancing, the Breckenridge Sanitation District will be changing its name to the Upper Blue Sanitation District.

Arrowhead Alpine Club raises $66K for breast cancer walk

A team of women from the Arrowhead Alpine Club raised $66,500 for breast cancer research and care at last month's Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

The team was the highest fundraising team in the Rocky Mountain region, and team member Sue Sewell was also the highest individual fundraiser for the event, raising $15,500.

Residents report three brushes with mountain lions

Division of Wildlife officials have killed two mountain lions this week that strayed into Durango city limits in southwestern Colorado.

On Saturday, wildlife officials euthanized a mountain lion found eating a cat behind a shed in a family’s yard.

Around 10 a.m. Wednesday, Chris Brinkley reported a mountain lion to wildlife officials behind his home.

That animal also was killed.

Wildlife officials said both were young female lions.

30 Years Later It is Called Snowboarding

Back in 1978, a reporter and photographer from the Rocky Mountain News made a pilgrimage to the snowy mountains of Breckenridge to find out more about a new, relatively unheard of sport called snurfing.

They had caught word that a local bartender named Bob “Bubba” Haught was surfing down snow, and apparently causing quite the scene in the small mountain community.

Town Council Considers Restricting Office Space in Downtown... Again

The Breckenridge Town Council is considering a proposal to limit office space in downtown commercial Breckenridge, again. After passing a similar proposal back in September of 2007 that limited residential development on Main Street and some surrounding areas, council members also feared expansion of office spaces in the same area would hinder the expansion of retail businesses, which are the main tourist attractions of downtown Breckenridge.

The idea has been around in the Town Council for some time now, and council members have been at a standstill for about as long as the idea has lived. Because of this, the Town Council has called a public town meeting for some community input. The meeting will be held at the Council Chambers in Breckenridge Town Hall from 5:30 P.M. to 7 P.M. on Wednesday, February 20th.

Breckenridge's Uhlaender Wins 2nd Overall Skeleton Title

Breckenridge's own Katie Uhlaender has won her second overall World Cup Skeleton title after she won the bronze medal in the World Cup finale in Winterberg, Germany, on February 9th.

Ulaender started the heat with a track-record of 59.35 seconds, all but to sit and watch the record beaten by her next four opponents. Not down and out however, Ulaender bested her previous time with a time of 59.27, the second best time of the competition. Her combined time put her in 3rd, beating out Canadian Michelle Kelly.

This win has brought Ulaender's overall medal count to 6 for this winter season, and the third place win has put Ulaender in first place in the overall points battle in World Skeleton for this season.

$10,000 Reward for Information on Mike Barbiere's Whereabouts

Breckenridge, CO (Feb. 19, 2008) - Police have suspended the search for a missing New Jersey man who was vacationing in Breckenridge. A 'responsible Wall Street employee' according to his parents, Michael Barbiere was last seen leaving Cecilia's Bar on Main Street on the early morning of February 9th. Family members have offered a $10,000 reward for any information leading to his whereabouts.

Police are looking continuing the search for 2 men who were seen talking to Barbiere at Cecilia's Bar the morning he went missing, but police said the men are not suspects and are not presumed to have been involved in any foul play. Police hope to talk to them in order to better establish a time line of Barbiere's activities leading to his disappearance.

Highway 9 is Ready to Expand!

Summit County, CO (Feb 19, 2008) - County and state officials revealed the finals plans for the expansion of Highway 9 in Summit County this week at a public meeting. The current 2-lane road will be expanded to feature 2 lanes for both directions, a raised median, and a school zone will be placed infront of Summit High School in order to provide some safety for pedestrian students. The ditches on the sides of the road will also be replaced with a curb and gutter system.

The call to expand Highway 9 has been in the minds of Breckenridge residents for almost a decade now, and many of Breckenridge's residents are rejoiceful that the plans are now going into action. Plans call for the road to be expanded between Agape Church and Swan Mountain Road and ground breaking could begin as soon as April, with the project completing sometime in November. The plan calls for the east side of the road to be expanded first, followed by the west side of the road. Look for traffic to be a little bit more hectic on the east side from April til mid-summer, while traffic on the west side of the road to be more complicated from mid-summer until the project's completion in November.
